Painkiller Cocktail

Painkiller Cocktail

For centuries, man has relied on refreshing beverages to quest the thirst and re-energize the body. The piña colada is one of the most famous drinks liked worldwide.

Bartenders have continually tested natural delicacies and mixed solutions to provide us with beverage marvels known as cocktails. One such marvel is the painkiller cocktail. This fruit-rich cocktail resembles the pina colada in many aspects and is, thus, considered a cousin.

Let us take you on a journey of the painkiller drink. We shall explore the past and the present of this great drink.

History Of The Painkiller Cocktail: Back To Soggy Dollar Bar

The painkiller cocktail was created in the 1970s, a period of painkiller drinks. This masterpiece came to creation in the British Virgin Islands in a bar named Soggy Dollar Bar. The bar used Navy rum, i.e., Pusser’s rum, to form the painkiller cocktail. Within no time, the drink became popular and a trademark by the 1980s.

As many boaters entered the small bar on the British Virgin Islands, the dollars were all wet and soggy, which led to the name, i.e., soggy dollar bar. The cocktail was the creation of Daphne Henderson, who wanted to serve the boaters with something refreshing. Henderson was aware of the problems faced by the swimmers and boaters, so he wanted them to forget about their pains. Thus, the painkiller cocktail was born.

The painkiller drink was neither an actual painkiller nor meant to alleviate pain; rather, the plan was to soothe the drinker. Therefore, it was dubbed “the painkiller cocktail.” Sometime after its creation, the painkiller cocktail recipe escaped the boundaries of the British Virgin Islands (despite Henderson’s attempt to keep the secret recipe hidden) and was available to average people.

It was Charles Tobias who tried to extract the painkiller recipe from Henderson. On failure, he went on to mix drinks to replicate the great recipe. His own recipe was quite similar to the pina colada cousin served at the soggy dollar bar. However, it wasn’t the exact recipe. Tobias called in good friends to taste his cocktail. Though drinkers noticed slight differences between the Soggy dollar bar’s painkiller cocktail and Tobias’ cocktail, everyone quickly noticed that Tobias’ drink was better.

What we now have is the Tobias version. The individual ingredients of the painkiller drink are discussed below:

To start off, first, you need to get all the ingredients of the recipe ready. This includes:

  • Pusser’s rum (2 ounces)
  • Pineapple juice (4 ounces)
  • Orange juice (1 ounce of freshly squeezed citrus juice)
  • Cream of coconut (about 1 ounce)

In addition to the basic ingredients, you should have freshly grated nutmeg and a pineapple wedge ready to garnish this tropical delicacy. Pineapple wedge and fresh nutmeg garnish make it presentable and more cocktail-ly.

Add all the basic ingredients (in the mentioned quantities) into a cocktail shaker. Add ice to the pineapple, orange juice and coconut combination and shake vigorously but do it briefly.

Pour the rum pineapple juice orange drink into a glass filled with ice. Garnish with ground nutmeg and a pineapple wedge. Enjoy your drink with a straw.
